DIY Plant Food

We know that many of you like to “DIY” when it comes to your flower beds and potted plants around your home.

Love Irrigation would like to offer you some tips on how to save money and reduce waste by using products you may already have to help your plants reach their full potential.

If you have children, more than likely you have, or will have, a fish tank that will need cleaning from time to time. Big or small, the dirty water that you remove can double as a fertilizer for your plants because the water is rich with nitrogen and other beneficial ingredients courtesy of your fish. One thing to remember is to avoid using water from a tank that had to be treated with chemicals (ex. algae clearing).

Epsom salt has been found to be a great fertilizer for indoor plants, peppers, and tomatoes. Mix up 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salt per gallon of water and use it once a month to water your plants.

Water from your cooked vegetables can be reused as well, just remember to let it cool before adding to your plants.

Instead of throwing your eggshells away, consider tossing them into the blender and grind them into a powder to sprinkle in your garden, giving your plants a calcium boost! By grinding the eggshells, the plants will absorb the nutrients faster instead of waiting for decomposition to occur, and you will avoid having eggshells laying in your soil.

If you have roses, reuse your banana peels. Instead of tossing them into the garbage, toss them into the blender with water, blend, and pour the mixture at the base of your roses to give them a special treat.

We hope that you find these tips useful…. Happy Planting!!!!
