As beautiful as these creatures are, deer can be a nuisance to your yard and destroy your hard work and money spent. We, at Love Irrigation, want to provide you with some tips to help protect your plants.

When considering what flowers to plant, using ones with scented foliage is a plus. Consider planting flowers that are less appealing to deer such as: Epimedium, Goldenrod, Caryopteris, or Dianthus.

If you are planting English Ivy, Inpatients, or Pansies, plant these close to the house and avoid over use because these are deer favorites.

Planting small patches throughout your garden of garlic, mint, lavender, or any other strongly scented herb will help mask the smell of the plants that are most appealing to deer.

Protect appealing plants by surrounding them with foliage that is prickly, thorny, or hairy or by using garden nets. Newly planted trees can be protected with tree protectors or plastic tree wraps.

Deer repellent is a common solution, but make sure you are reapplying it after it rains and rotate formulas every 2-3 months. Make sure you using a formula that is not harmful to pets or humans. The goal is to deter, not poison.

Deer are fearful of new things, so consider using garden  ornaments, some with movable parts, and wind chimes.

For dog owners, allowing your fur baby to be outdoors frequently will help deter deer due to the dog’s barking and scent.

On the perimeter of your bed, you can try placing fishing line that sits 2 to 3 feet above the ground that can confuse deer and make them flee your yard.

Motion sensor flood lighting as well as sprinkler heads can be effective as well.

It is important to remember that not all of these tips will be effective, so it is best to use a combination and decide what works best for your budget and your yard.
