Winterize and Protect Your System -Its Almost that time of year!

Why Should You Winterize?

Many of our customers may wonder why it is important to winterize their system. This year, we serviced a large amount of systems that were not winterized in the past. Many of the repairs performed were directly related to the system not being winterized. We also had quite a few people who had to purchase new pumps. You can avoid costly repairs by protecting your investment. This year, make the choice to winterize your irrigation system,  Mist Away system, and pump.

When you winterize your system, you are taking a preventive measure. Winterization is suggested for those who live in areas where the temperature drops below freezing several times a year, or stays below freezing for more than one day. Removing the water from your pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads can save your system from potential serious and costly damage. If water is left in your system during winter months, it can freeze, causing your equipment to expand.  This process could occur more than once during the winter. As a result, pipes and valves can become cracked and will need repairing in the spring. If you have a pump, this needs to be done as well.

What to expect when you winterize your system:

Systems with a shut-off valve will have the valve insulated for protection. Automatic systems will need the controller shut down. This can be done by placing the controller in rain mode, keeping the controller on and saving the time and program settings, or by shutting the controller completely off. If the controller is shut down completely, it will need to be re-programmed in the spring. The water in your system will then be drained. Those with a backflow preventer or a valve above the ground will need to have these insulated. If you have a pump, winterize this as well.

Mist Away mosquito systems should be winterized for the same reasons as irrigation systems. The water that remains in the lines can become frozen, damaging the system’s lines, nozzles, flow meters, and pumps. When you winterize, it helps keep your system healthy and effective!
